The care and washing of organic cotton linens requires special care to preserve the quality of the fiber and ensure the durability of the garments while respecting the environment. Here are some practical tips:
1. Sorting the laundry
Before washing, sort organic cotton clothes by color (light, dark) and fabric type (e.g., delicates vs. heavy-duty). This prevents color bleeding and protects finer fabrics.
2. Washing temperature
It is recommended to wash organic cotton clothing at a moderate temperature, generally between 30 and 40°C. This helps preserve the soft texture and natural properties of the fibers. Cold washes are also a good option to protect the environment and prevent fabric shrinkage.
3. Mild detergent
Use a mild detergent, preferably an eco-friendly one, without harsh chemicals. Biodegradable detergents are a good option for organic cotton because they're environmentally friendly while being gentle on the fabric. Avoid chemical fabric softeners, which can alter the texture of organic cotton and impair its breathability.
4. Do not overload the machine
To avoid damaging the cotton, do not overload your machine. This allows water and detergent to circulate freely, ensuring an efficient and gentle wash.
5. Selecting the washing program
If possible, choose a low spin or delicate wash cycle to preserve the fiber. Organic cotton may be more sensitive to the intense rubbing of standard cycles.
6. Drying
After washing, air dry the garment, preferably in the shade, to prevent the colors from fading in the sun. Machine drying is possible at a low temperature, but it's best not to overuse the dryer, as this can damage the fabric in the long run.
7. Ironing
Organic cotton can be ironed at a medium temperature while the garment is still slightly damp. This helps prevent shrinkage while maintaining the fabric's softness. Steam ironing is also possible for a softer effect.
